Chrétien de Troyes was a French poet and troubadour of the late 12th century about whom little is known, other than the natural assumption that he came from the town of Troyes in northern France. Several of his poems have come down to us. Apart from that on Thomas of Dundale he wrote five other works, based mostly on heroic tales from the legends of King Arthur. Some critics consider him to be the First French Novelist - a dubious honour.
