Conventionally, demons are held to be malevolent but powerful Higher Beings who were once Angels, but who fell from grace and now reside in Hell. They are best avoided. Due to the exigencies of statecraft however John Uskglass seems at times to have entered into negotiations with certain demons; the claim he concluded pacts or treaties with them is perhaps an unfounded one. The wording of his prophecy certainly implies his relations with them were fraught, at least at times:

"Blood that I shed upon ancient battlefields is scraped from the stained earth by Hell's sacristans and placed in a vessel of silver and ivory." (Prophecy, Line 17)
