East Riding

Historically the county of Yorkshire has been divided since Viking times into three regions or "ridings" (the name is thought to derive from the Norse word for a third part, "thrithiungr"): these are the East, North and West Ridings.

Gilbert Norrell's servant John Childermass is apparently from the East Riding, where, we are told, his mother Black Joan once ran a gang of child pickpockets[63].
