Egyptian is the name of Jonathan Strange's favourite horse. When Strange is serving under Lord Wellington in the Peninsula he at first finds great difficulty in hitting on the sort of magic which will be of use to his lordship, until he has the idea of using magic to create a good, serviceable road for the army to march along. After his first experiment in this line he and Lord Wellington ride along the newly-made road together, Wellington on his horse Copenhagen and Strange on his favourite mount, Egyptian. From a remark made by Strange a day earlier, to the effect that he had been so afraid for his horse on the bad road between Espinhal and Lousao that he had been "certain she would fall lame" it seems likely that Egyptian is a mare[29].
