An epitome (from the Greek word meaning 'to cut short' or 'abridge') is a condensed form of one spell, inserted within another to make it more efficacious. There are many kinds of epitome: Gilbert Norrell mentions an epitome of preservation and deliverance, added to a summoning spell, with the aim of protecting the magician from the possible ill-humour of the person summoned. He prudently adds it to the spell summoning John Uskglass[66].
