Frederick Marston is described as "a dark-haired young man", an enthusiast for magic, very desirous of being taken on as Mr Norrell's pupil. In pursuit of this end he loiters for several days outside Mr Norrell's house in Hanover-square in hopes of forcing an interview with him, since whenever he calls at the house he is refused entry. When Lady Pole makes her desperate attempt on Mr Norrell's life Mr Marston tries to intervene by seizing her around the waist, but she is too strong for him: however, it may be said that he delays her.
Of course, it might equally be said that but for Mr Marston's delaying Gilbert Norrell by detaining him in a conversation he had no wish for, Lady Pole would not have had an opportunity to put her wicked plan into effect[46].
