Geoffrey is one of Sir Walter Pole's footmen. He accidentally meets the gentleman with the thistle-down hair at midnight on the stairs of the house. The Gentleman, always conscious of his dignity, merely gives him a cool look and passes on, but Geoffrey is naturally very shaken by the incident and tells his master of it the next morning. He might however just as well have held his peace, for Sir Walter merely supposes him to be either foolish, or drunk[18].
