Horse Sand is a shoal to the south of Portsea Island, upon which the port city of Portsmouth stands.

In 1810 the ship False Prelate ran aground on the shoal, necessitating its rescue by Jonathan Strange, who conjured up horses made from the shoal's sand — sand horses made from Horse Sand — to pull the stranded ship free [28].
