How to putte Questiones to the Dark and understand its Answeres
How to putte Questiones to the Dark and understand its Answeres is the title of the first book that attracts Mr Segundus's eye when he visits Mr Norrell's library at Hurtfew. His anxious host, seeing him drawn to it, opines that it is "a foolish work", and Mr Segundus politely defers to his judgment and passes on. But then, Mr Norrell is equally disparaging about all the books in which Mr Segundus shows any interest. It may be his unworthy motive to dissuade his guest from picking up any of his precious volumes and looking in them [1].
Notes
Nothing further is known of this book beyond its title, which perhaps indicates it is a work of divination. The antiquated orthography used in the title suggests a work of sixteenth or seventeenth-century origin.
