A familiar figure

Just before Lady Pole makes her vengeful attempt upon Mr Norrell's life his faithful servant John Childermass, who is experiencing a premonition of danger so strong it almost unmans him, anxiously surveys the square to see if he can detect any possible assailant.

His uncertain gaze sweeps over several loiterers and passersby, who are all alike strangers to him. The only person who gives him no unease whatever is a humble ink-seller, whose ragged form is one Childermass knows very well - he has often bought ink from him. [46]
