John Upchurch

John Upchurch, servant to Mrs Brandy, an honest man. He is present on the occasion that twenty-five golden guineas are found in the cash-box, placed there magically by the gentleman with the thistle-down hair so that they may be used to the benefit of Stephen Black. The guineas shine with an eerie light, and those objects upon which the light falls are changed in sinister ways. For example, John Upchurch takes on an appearance of slyness and duplicity, though we are told he is in fact "a steady soul, hard-working and capable"[17].
