Nicholas Goubert was a 16th century magician and author of the Gatekeeper of Apollo, a work which Jonathan Strange cites as containing much that may be helpful in dispelling the Eternal Darkness[69]. In the days before he gave up the study of theoretical magic Lord Portishead wrote a scholarly biography of Goubert[12].
Goubert is a surname, variation of Gobert, of Germanic origin. The eldest representation of the name is Godberht, composed of god which means God and berht meaning famous, notorious.
As the spelling of English was not standardized during the Middle Ages, names can be found in many different forms in written records: Godbert (god + bright).
It is most widespread in Belgium, Germany and also, but somewhat less, in France.
