A maid attending to smoothing her mistress's clothes

Pampisford is the name of Lady Pole's maid. She is the person Sir Walter first applies to for an explanation as to why, within days of their marriage, his wife has become silent, exhausted and withdrawn. Pampisford, unaware of the enchantment her mistress is under, cannot enlighten him[18].

NOTES AND QUERIES:

Editor's note:
Pampisford: is the name of a village in Cambridgeshire, a county which borders on Northamptonshire where of course Lady Pole's estate of Great Hitherden lies. We may suppose the maid came from a family long connected with Lady Pole's country residence.
