Pontefract

Pontefract is a market town in Yorkshire. The name, which means 'broken bridge', was generally given in Norman and mediaeval times as 'Pomfret'. King Richard II was so unlucky as to be murdered in the castle there, and Pontefract was also the scene of a battle at which the pretender known as the Summer King was defeated. More recently the town has been noted for the production and sale of liquorice. Further information may be found here.
