The twelfth century magician Robert Dymoke was cursed by a fairy so that he could only sing and no longer speak [69]. Jonathan Strange instanced this to his wife as an example of the inconveniences under which magicians occasionally laboured: he hoped to suggest to her that his own confinement in the Pillar of Darkness was, in contrast, very little trouble at all.
