According to John Childermass, in magic roses signify silence. Thus he is easily able to interpret the meaning of the red-and-white rose which the perceptive Mr. Segundus sees placed before the lips of Lady Pole and Stephen Black[47] - "it is a muffling-spell [64]."
(His ready answer, by-the-by, gives us yet more proof of how deeply-read Childermass is in magical lore.)

The use of a rose as an emblem of secrecy is of course not confined to magic, as this article amply demonstrates.
