A country to the north of England, famous for mountains, history and romance. Mr. Strange is half-Scots, as his mother was one of the Erquistoune family of Edinburgh. This perhaps explains the reddish tint of his hair, which Christopher Drawlight so deplores[24].

Scotland is also a country of magic, its inhabitants naturally believing their performances in the art rather superior to those practised in the south. The famous Magician of Athodel (formerly one of the Western Isles, now vanished away) was a Scottish master[63].
