Miss Sophronia Watkins does not appear within the pages of the book but is spoken of as the intended bride of Rev.Henry Woodhope, in whose parish of Great Hitherden she dwelt. He was attracted to her less for her personal charms than for her many amiable qualities, which included a charitable inclination towards visiting the poor. Miss Watkins was also the heiress of ten thousand pounds [43].
