The Blue Book: being an attempt to expose the most prevalent lies and common deceptions practised by English magicians upon the King's subjects and upon each other, by Valentine Munday, was published in 1698. In it, Munday claims that the Other Lands do not exist, and everyone who claimed to have gone there had lied about their adventures. Although Gilbert Norrell stated that Munday's claim was incorrect, he was sympathetic to Munday's position and desired to "make it more generally known" [25].
The Blue Book was the first book which Norrell loaned to Jonathan Strange when the latter began his pupilage under Norrell.

Saved many a time from the fires it was supposed to be thrown into, this worn down copy of the Blue Book remains an interesting document concerning unscrupulous magicians. |
