A grandson of the Thomas Longman of Bristol who began the family connexion with the book trade, Thomas Norton Longman (b.1771) is one of the most successful publishers in London. The Longmans had tended to specialize in books on science, though they are also to be remembered for their part in publishing Dr Johnson's admired Dictionary of the English Language: but in 1816 Mr Longman also took over publication of The Friends of English Magic after its former proprietor John Murray parted company with Mr Norrell[12].
