Toby Smith

Toby Smith is a shopman in the employ of Mrs Brandy. He is descibed as a red-headed man of an uncertain and nervous temper.

It is Toby who brings to his employer's attention the sudden strange appearance of twenty-five golden guineas in the cash-box, magically placed there by the gentleman with the thistle-down hair so that Mrs Brandy may pass them on to Stephen Black[17]. It is also Toby who runs after Stephen to present him with a silver diadem, apparently under the impression he is giving him the hat he has forgotten and left in the shop.[26]*

Notes

*As it is unlikely that one could confuse a hat — regardless of the quality of its manufacture — with a silver diadem, his confusion is no doubt an effect of the enchantment imposed by the Gentleman.
