Waterloo is the name of a city — though at the time it could hardly be dignified with the title of village — in what is now Belgium.

Following the Battle of Quatre Bras, Jonathan Strange is informed that Duke of Wellington intends to meet the forces of Buonaparte there. Strange comments on the oddness of the name, supposing it to have been misreported and states "Depend upon it, there is no such place as Waterloo!" [40].

The Battle of Waterloo took place there on Sunday, June 18, 1815.
