Captain Whyte is an officer of the 18th Hussars whom Strange meets during the Peninsular campaign. They travel together to rejoin Wellington's staff at Flores de Avila.
Although many of Lord Wellington's officers were men of rank and fashion it appears Captain Whyte was neither, for we are told he was a professional soldier, and also that he had lived in the house of the British envoy at Naples, though in what capacity is not clear. A natural linguist, the captain is well-versed in the Italian language, especially that spoken around Naples, and so is able to act as interpreter when Strange re-animates the unfortunate Neapolitans[31].
