William Pitt the Younger (1759–1806) became Prime Minister of England at 24 — a surprisingly young age for such an onerous office. He was leader of the government until his death, bar a period of some three years or so. He was Lord Chatham's younger brother, and his reputation for competence was such that in October 1807 Mr Canning proposed that Mr.Norrell bring him back to life to lead the country again.

Mr Norrell declined on the grounds that the length of time between Mr Pitt's death and his proposed resurrection meant that his body would have been greatly affected by the natural processes of decay. No-one wished to see Mr Pitt conducting cabinet meetings in this sad condition [10].
