"AN APPEAL TO THE FRIENDS OF ENGLISH MAGIC" is a letter to The Times by John Segundus, detailing the magic done by Mr Norrell at York. He wrote it in compliance with a strong hint he received from John Childermass, who had previously persuaded his master that in order to further the cause of English Magic it was necessary for him to become better known. Thus the letter was the catalyst in Norrell's moving to London and beginning the Revival of English Magic[4].
