York is the county town of Yorkshire. Originally a Roman camp and later conquered by the Vikings, it is the home of the cathedral, the scene of Gilbert Norrell's first public act of magic; of the Learned Society of York Magicians; of Mr. Honeyfoot and, for a period at least, of Mr Segundus. It is also the birthplace of the part-fairy clergyman Alessandro Simonelli.
