Conjectures

Martin Pale's Conjectures Concerning the Foreshadowing of Things To Come is a spell used to show the magician what is likely to occur in the near future. It is likely a simplified and weaker version of a spell the Raven King is rumoured to have used to see the outcome of his battles [40]. Jonathan Strange, ever the experimenter, employs it before the Battle of Waterloo: but he does not relish the result. Glancing about him at a scene where all is bustle and activity he gradually becomes aware how many of those he is looking at, horses and men alike, are vanishing imperceptibly from his sight. One by one, like bubbles bursting, they are gone and leave behind nothing but the silence and the rain. It is a foretelling of death.
