Hugh Torel was a twelfth-century magician, sometimes known as the Master of Nottingham. He sought to suppress a Nottinghamshire fellowship of female magicians although his own daughter, Donata Torel, was a member of the company.

Hugh Torel's efforts were so near to succeeding at first that the women of the fellowship eventually abandoned their homes and families to live in the forest; and crucially they also obtained the protection of Thomas Godbless, a more powerful magician than Torel [25].

There is an alternative, fanciful and probably untrue story concerning a magical ring Hugh Torel was said to possess [25].
