Merlin (properly 'Merlin Ambrosius', or as the Welsh have it Myrddin Emrys) was a magician in Britain sometime before 1100. He was half-Welshman (on his mother's side) and half-demon (his father). He is best remembered in popular legend as the friend and counsellor of King Arthur.

You may find here a good article on Merlin; Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell however mentions him only briefly as a magician who, like Joseph of Arimathea, pre-dated the Raven King but founded no school of magic and left no followers. It does not go into further detail[38].

"Merlin" is also the Duke of Wellington's nickname for Jonathan Strange.
