Mrs Wintertowne is a wealthy lady of mature years, a widow, whose only daughter Emma marries the Government minister Sir Walter Pole.

A lady of stately character and forceful opinions, Mrs Wintertowne lives in a handsome property in Brunswick-square. When first met with she is rather disparaging in her comments on the efficacy of practical magicians, quoting the comical experiences she suffered in her youth at the hands of an incompetent fraud called Dreamditch (her foolish stepmother's favourite)[6]. After Gilbert Norrell restores her daughter to life however, her views undergo a material change[8].
