River Derwent

The Derwent is the name of a river in Derbyshire. It is the county's longest river and has its source at Swain's Greave on the flank of Bleaklow Hill.
According to Aunt Greysteel the Derwent was formerly a noble torrent, but having fallen foul of John Uskglass it was reduced by his vengeful fairy followers to a mere shallow trickle[51].
Confusingly there are other River Derwents, including one in the East Riding of Yorkshire; but it is of the one in Derbyshire that Aunt Greysteel speaks. (Antiquarians tell us that 'Derwent' simply means 'valley of the oaks', which perhaps explains why the name is so commonly met with.)
