Spencer Perceval (1762-1812) , who in 1808 was Chancellor of the Exchequer, is among the Ministers with whom Sir Walter Pole discusses the mysterious lassitude afflicting Lady Pole shortly after her marriage (which is in fact a consequence of her enchantment by the gentleman with the thistle-down hair). Mr Perceval advises Sir Walter to apply to Lady Pole's personal maid for information, but Sir Walter has already done so and without result[18].
Mr Perceval eventually achieved the exalted position of Prime Minister, in which capacity, in 1812, he had the ill-luck to be shot through the heart by a lunatic while passing through the lobby of the House of Commons.
