Whitbyian Heresy

The Whitbyian Heresy is a theory put forward by Alexander of Whitby, a thirteenth-century magician. Alexander likened the universe to a tapestry and suggested that while one lives one can only see a few parts of the universe at a time. After one has died, however, one would be able to see the entire picture and understand the relation between the numerous parts. Alexander was eventually forced to retract his hypothesis after accusations of heresy. Priests and magicians alike were afterward on the lookout for the Whitbyian Heresy - the former to detect it, the latter to avoid being accused of it [43].
