Carlisle

Carlisle is the county town of Cumberland. It lies close to the border with Scotland and in the course of its long history has been much battered about in warfare, belonging variously to Northern England, to Scotland and to the old Celtic kingdom of Rheged . It has a fine castle built by William II and a cathedral with an extensive library.
