Mrs Hettie Pleasance was the widowed landlady who took such motherly care of Mr Segundus when he first came to York and lodged with her at Lady-Peckitt's-yard. By her own admission she was a famous baker of bread [2]. She also attempted some simple home remedies for minor complaints[2]. A Mrs Cockcroft of the George Inn is a friend of hers [3].

Notes

'Hettie', while it can serve as a forename on its own, is most usually a diminutive of another, such as 'Henrietta'. There are many other names that may be so treated as to shew affection or endearment, such as Harriet, Hester, etc.
