Lady-Peckitt's-yard is off Fossgate in York. The houses there, though not unhandsome. are somewhat old-fashioned, as can be seen by the illustration on the left. The thoroughfare itself is a little narrow: York has many such.
A widow, Mrs. Hettie Pleasance kept lodgings in one of these houses in 1806, and it was to her that John Segundus applied when he first arrived in York. He apparently had a room on the third storey. Though his lodgings were simple he was fortunate in his landlady, who was not only a generous housekeeper and an excellent plain cook but who also baked her own bread[2].
